
What is TVA?
The Tennessee Valley Authority, or TVA, is the largest public power company in the United States. That means TVA generates electricity for you, your family and all your neighbors in the Valley region.
But that’s not all! Here’s a few things that TVA does:
- Produces electricity for 10 million people Tennessee and six surrounding states
- Operates dams along the Tennessee River
- Manages recreation areas for fishing, boating, hiking, camping and more!
- Protects fish, wildlife and plants.
- Cares for historic sites.
- Works with communities to bring good jobs to the area.
Where is TVA?
TVA serves the people living in these states:
- Tennessee
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Alabama
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- Virginia


The Tennessee River
The Tennessee River stretches from Knoxville, Tennessee, through north Alabama and up into Kentucky. TVA manages the river for a host of benefits, including navigation, power generation and recreation. Managing the Tennessee River and its tributaries is a key part of TVA's mission.

How Did TVA Begin?
TVA was created in 1933 by the U.S. government. It is one of many government programs that began during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. All the programs were made to help people during the Great Depression. TVA helped by managing the Tennessee River.
