Powering the Future
More and more people and businesses are moving to the region each year. That means more people need more energy!
TVA is working with a team to find ways to bring more electric generation to the region while also caring for the environment.
TVA is working with:
- Federal government agencies and researchers
- State government agencies
- Local governments
- Private businesses
Small Modular Reactors
Small modular reactors — or SMRs, as they’re often called — work like big nuclear plants to make carbon-free (or clean) energy.
But they’re smaller. They could be built in factories before being put together at their site. TVA is exploring building an SMR near Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
TVA is the first utility in the United States to apply for a construction permit to build an SMR. The U.S. Department of Energy approved a $400 million grant in 2025 to help pay for part of the project.

Fusion Technology
Fusion is the same process that powers the Sun and stars!
It happens when tiny atoms smash together and make a bigger atom. When they do this, they release a lot of heat that can be turned into electricity.
TVA is working with a company called Type One Energy and scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to build a new kind of energy generation plant at TVA’s Bull Run site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Fusion technology is:
Clean Energy — it doesn’t make smoke or carbon
No Long-Term Waste — fusion doesn’t leave behind radioactive material that must be stored for thousands of years.
Lots of Fuel – fusion uses fuel that’s easily found, like hydrogen.
