A Recreation Destination

TVA has great places to enjoy the outdoors on land and on water. These recreation opportunities aren't just fun — they're important for local communities!

While many of TVA's recreation areas are free to use, they bring people from all over to visit. And those visitors spend money — at local restaurants, local marinas, local hotels.

Each year, TVA' rivers and lakes help bring about $12 billion to the region from tourism. That's about $1 million per mile of shoreline!

What is Economic Impact?

TVA worked with scientists at the University of Tennessee. The scientists measured how much money visitors spent in 2016 in TVA recreation areas.They looked at how much people spent on:

  • Entertainment
  • Shopping
  • Food
  • Rental Fees
  • Hunting, Fishing and Camping Supplies

Visitors shopped and spent money at a lot of local businesses. Those businesses use money people spend in their stores to pay employees. About 130,000 people work at these businesses!

Why It Matters

TVA takes care of the lakes and rivers so people can enjoy them safely. All that fun is also a big help for towns and families.

The money visitors spend help local businesses. That money also adds to tax revenue local communities collect. That helps everyone in a community! Taxes are spent on things like local parks, fire and police departments and local schools.

So, the next time you head out for a day at the lake, remember your fun day helps a lot of people!
