Fun on TVA land

Fun on TVA Land

TVA takes care of thousands of acres of land. A lot of that land is available to you to use for fun! TVA takes care of the land around the dams and near the lakes.

Some areas have recreation day-use areas. These are great places to visit. Many have playgrounds, picnic sites and swim beaches. They’re all open to the public and there isn’t a charge to use them.

Thousands of people visit these recreation areas every year. But there’s more fun to be had on TVA land. Here’s some ways people enjoy TVA public lands across the region.

People walking in the forest

Hiking

Enjoy a walk in the woods on one of TVA’s trails. TVA has more than 190 miles of trails across the region. Many trails are found near dams and lakes. You can enjoy short, paved trails or rugged, multi-mile trail systems.

Trails may be under a mile or part of a multi-mile trail system. Choose how far you want to go! Some trails are made just for walking. Some are paved for bikes and strollers. One trail is for horses! The trails may take you to fishing spots or swimming holes. Or, they may have places to enjoy overlooks of the river and spot wildflowers in bloom. Find a trail at TVA’s Trail Guide.

Mountain biker

Mountain Biking

TVA has great trails for mountain biking! The Loyston Loop and Mill Creek Loop trails have both been named among the best mountain bike trails in Tennessee. There are trails for beginners to advanced bikers.

You can choose from beginner trails, like the South Holston Trails. Or – when you’re ready – challenge yourself on the tough trails at Racoon Mountain. Remember to wear a helmet, bring water and bike with a friend. Learn more about TVA’s mountain bike trails.

Tent

Camping

TVA let’s you stay the night at campgrounds across the region. The campgrounds are open March 15-Nov. 15 each year, with RV and tent camping available. The campgrounds are popular, so you’ll need a reservation.

There are developed campgrounds at six of TVA’s dams. These campgrounds often welcome tents and RVs. Campgrounds will have restrooms and fun things to do, like basketball courts and playgrounds. Tent camping is also available on undeveloped TVA land. These areas won’t have things like picnic shelters, restrooms or playgrounds. But they let you get out and enjoy nature!

Deer

Hunting

A lot of TVA land doesn’t have anything on it. This undeveloped land offers great places to go hunting! You’ll need a hunting license in the state where you’re hunting. Be sure to review rules for undeveloped land.

People hunt for different things on TVA land: Ducks, Geese, Deer, Wild Turkey. Make sure to check the hunting season and wear all the safety gear like hunter-orange hats and vests. TVA’s undeveloped lands aren’t just for hunting, so watch out for hikers and other people. You can’t hunt near a dam, power plant, substation, campgrounds or developed recreation areas.
