Comment Deadline Nears on Scope of TVA Energy Plan

November 21, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee Valley Authority is accepting public comments through Friday, Nov. 22, in the initial phase of updating the Integrated Resource Plan, TVA’s long-term energy resource strategy.

To ensure a full range of issues and energy resources are considered, TVA has been taking suggestions and comments since Oct. 19 on the scope of the IRP and the associated Supplement Environmental Impact Statement.

“We are very pleased to see the public response to our scoping process so far,” said Gary Brinkworth, program manager for the IRP effort. “We’ve received hundreds of comments since our dual public meeting/webinars in October and early November. We want to be sure everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts with us.”

The IRP is being updated to reflect changes both for the industry and TVA since TVA last completed an IRP in 2011, including availability of lower-cost natural gas, slower electricity demand growth, a new schedule for completing Watts Bar Nuclear Unit 2 in 2015, and TVA's decision to retire 26 older coal units.

TVA anticipates the IRP and the SEIS will address the cost and reliability of power; the effects of power production on the environment; the use of renewable power, energy efficiency; the handling of power generation byproducts, the relationship of the economy to all of these activities, and the impact on TVA’s transmission system.

Written comments should be sent to Charles P. Nicholson, Tennessee Valley Authority, 400 West Summit Hill Drive, WT 11D, Knoxville, TN 37902. Comments also may be submitted on the project website at http://www.tva.gov/irp, or by email at IRP@tva.gov.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity, flood control, Tennessee River navigation and land management and economic development support for businesses and local power companies serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states.
