Diversity Strengthens TVA’s Supply Chain

April 30, 2014

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Representatives from more than 75 companies attended the Tennessee Valley Authority’s second annual Supplier Diversity Outreach Summit on Wednesday to showcase their unique ideas and capabilities to TVA and other Chattanooga organizations.

TVA President and CEO Bill Johnson noted in a keynote speech to the group that a diverse supply chain is essential to TVA’s mission.

“Today’s business climate requires openness to new ideas, innovative solutions and bright minds that possess the knowledge and the passion to achieve success,” said Johnson. “Supplier diversity gives TVA advantages far beyond simply lowering costs and improving operational efficiency. We are confident that partnering with these firms strengthens our ability to succeed as a national leader in providing safe, clean, reliable and low-cost electricity.”

In 2013, TVA purchased about $3.4 billion in goods and services. About one-fourth was spent with small businesses and about two-thirds with businesses located in the Tennessee Valley.

Business leaders at the summit participated in workshops on the basics of contracting with the federal government and how to best prepare competitive proposals. They also had multiple networking opportunities with TVA contract managers and prime suppliers.

Additional information for businesses interested in partnering with TVA can be found on a special supplier portal at http://supplier.tva.gov.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
